A chatbot replies. An AI agent acts
A chatbot answers standard questions, while an AI agent analyses the request and performs authorised actions inside the company’s digital system.

A conventional chatbot works like a reference guide. It welcomes the client, presents predefined options, answers frequently asked questions, and hands the conversation over to an employee. This may be enough for simple and repetitive enquiries, but such a bot usually does not understand the client’s complete objective and cannot independently complete the entire workflow.
An AI agent works differently. It can identify the user’s intent, request missing information, access a database, check service availability, prepare an estimate, create a CRM request, send a document, and notify the responsible employee. It does not merely maintain a conversation; it performs a sequence of authorised actions within the company’s digital system.
This does not mean that every business must immediately implement a complex AI agent. If clients only need answers to standard questions, a properly configured chatbot is sufficient. When enquiries require data analysis, personalised selection, document processing, and interaction with several systems, an AI agent can significantly reduce manual operations.
In practice, a combined approach is often the most effective: the chatbot quickly resolves simple questions, the AI agent performs more complex tasks, and an employee confirms important decisions and steps in wherever human involvement is required.
